Our Community of Reference

One of the most important factors in building a Messianic Judaism is to understand who is our community of reference.

In understanding and embracing the Jewish community and Judaism as our community of reference, our "home base", we are making a huge leap from our Hebrew Christian past to begin to fully grasp our Messianic Judaism future.

My synagogue is in the Pico-Robertson area of Los Angeles, a distinctly Orthodox Jewish neighborhood with at least 11 Orthodox synagogues within walking distance of my shul. These communities are our community, our community of reference and the ones that we are in relation.

My synagogue is next to a Lutheran church and our facilities are used by a Foursquare Church on Sundays. Though these are good communities and led by good people, they are not our community of reference. They are Christian churches seeking to be a home for all people of the world and primarily oriented to non-Jews. We are united in our belief in Yeshua, yet we are distinct religious communities.

To build a Messianic Judaism we must orient ourselves to being a part of the Jewish world and seek to be living, breathing Jewish faith communities that glorify our G-d by honoring G-d's Torah and truly giving glory to Yeshua, our righteous Messiah.

May we be the builders of our Messianic Judaism future!

Gentile Christians are our brothers and sisters in Yeshua, and non-Messianic Jews are our brothers and sisters in the covenant.

I belong to the Body of Messiah, which is my family. And I also belong to the Jewish Family.

Well said! I'm a Jew, that comes naturally, and we must always remain committed to Hashem and His unique covenant with our Jewish people. We are Jewish, and the Jewish community is our community of reference. However, it's also extremely important that we acknowledge Gentile Christians as our brothers and sisters in Yeshua. Our Gentile Christian brothers and sisters are not complete "strangers". They are our immediate family in Him.

I love the MJRC and Hashivenu, but I'm confused. Nobody answers my emails. Does the Postmissionary movement in MJ believe we no longer should reach out, verbally, to our Jewish people with the Good News? Is this the position of Hashivenu as well? When Shaul, Kefa, Stephanus etc. reached out, quite loud and verbally, were they in wrong? Shall we not send out emissaries, but leave that to the Chabadniks and their veneration of a fake messiah? And does Postmissionary and Hashivenu people believe that the Bible is spotless, inspired by G-d, without error? I'm terrified of modern liberals claiming that homosexuality and abortion is OK now, because times have changed, or we just need to re-interpret the Bible in light of our modern knowledge. I believe that we may change halakha (rabbinic tradition and ordinances) to adapt to the changing times. But we may never change anything in the Written Torah (and then I mean all of Tanakh and Brit Chadesha). Is this something Hashivenu would agree with? I'm sorry if these are stupid questions. I'm not an interested person, but no expert or scholar.

Yochanan,
That was very well said. As a Jew and a lover of the Messiah, I was once a christian. I'm struggling to move into a synagogue, because I really can't relate to the christian world any longer, so I feel I'm stuck in the middle. We don't have any Messianic congregations around us soooo..Well that being said I'll be back to visit often. Great blog!
Shalom
